ADHD assessments

WHY CHOOSE US?

GOLD STANDARD ASSESSMENTS

  • At Lucens Psychology Services, we use 'gold-standard' approaches to assess for potential attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, including the Connors Screening tool and ADHD Clinical Evaluation version 2 (ACEv2) interview for children and ACE+ v2 for adults. We spend approximately 3 hours+ in interview gathering background information and a full developmental history, as well as discussing in detail traits and tendencies specific to ADHD.

  • In addition, we gather collateral information from a third party in interview and/ or questionnaires.

  • All assessments are conducted in-person.

  • For primary school children, we may recommend an observational assessment in school.

  • We do not just place emphasis on what we see, but importantly ensure we hear directly about the internal experiences of the young person or adult, to consider any impact of masking / camouflaging and discuss the impact on the person’s life, at work, in education, at home and daily life, and in relationships.

  • We follow guidelines from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE Guidelines).

highly experienced clinicians

Sometimes, people can appear to have ADHD-like traits, but they may be attributable to other causes and not due to the neurodevelopmental condition of ADHD. As part of our professional assessment, it is important to consider whether traits may have an alternative underlying cause. This is explored in the extended interview stage with the Clinical Psychologist.

regulated professionals offering peace of mind

Contrary to the belief of some, getting a private assessment does not mean that a diagnosis is automatically given. All professionals involved in the assessment process currently work or have worked in the NHS as well as private practice, we are regulated by our professional clinical bodies (HCPC and BPS) and adhere to professional and ethical standards.

REFERRAL PATHWAY TO A CONSULTANT PSYCHIATRIST

In the event that a diagnosis is provided and you wish to consider medication as a potential treatment, we have an established referral pathway with a Consultant Psychiatrist, who will review the information gathered in the assessment and determine with you whether medication is suitable.

WHAT IS ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER?

In broad terms, ADHD refers to a cluster of traits and tendencies that present as inattentiveness in a range of ways, impulsivity of speech and / or actions, and / or an excessive need for movement and difficulties resting. A diagnosis is appropriate if these traits present difficulties for a person, to the degree that they impact significantly on their occupational, academic, day-to-day life or relationships.

There are three types of ADHD: inattentive type, hyperactive / impulsive type, and combined type.
